If you’ve been shopping for rugs lately, you’ve probably heard the term Kilim. These gorgeous rugs are all the rage and popping up all over Pinterest, so I thought we would learn a little bit more about them. Hopefully this information will help you understand the answer to the question “what is a kilim rug?” and to decide if one is right for your room.
The major difference between a Kilim area rug and a carpet or a pile rug, is that instead of a design being created by knotting several strands of different colors together (like a pile rug), with a Kilim rug the pattern is actually woven into the design of the rug, so it is a flatweave design. Kilims are Turkish, and are part of a long tradition of hand-crafted goods made in villages. The looms used to weave them are usually on the smaller size, which is why it is difficult to find large Kilim rugs. The beauty of these rugs is that they are even prettier when mixed and matched. If you need to cover a larger room, consider using two rugs layered together to cover your space.

Because the pattern is woven into the Kilim rug, they are often created with fun, vibrant colors and beautiful graphic designs, making them a great way to inject some serious personality into a room or entryway. You really can’t go wrong with putting one anywhere in the house. You can even layer them over existing carpet in bedroom or living room. Check out these great examples of decorating with Kilim rugs.
