The right pendant lighting in your kitchen can make or break the space. I like to think of the light fixture as the jewelry in your room. I’ve been seeing so many gorgeous kitchens with such striking pendant light fixtures, I wanted to talk a little bit about choosing the right pendant lighting for your project. Pendant lighting for kitchen use isn’t just beautiful, you want it to be functional too. Here are a few things to consider when choosing your pendant light:

A pendant does it all, providing overall light, which is used for all-purpose use; task lighting, to focus light on a specific area; and accent lighting. You also want to consider what type of light your pendant light is going to provide. A pendant with a closed top will create circles of bright light, where as one with an open top or diffuser will help to create a softer circle of light. The bulbs make a difference too. If you love an semi opaque bulbs will create softer light than clear bulbs. For all-purpose everyday lighting, place a few pendants evenly spaced over the work area, like your kitchen island. Typically, the bigger your pendant is, the larger the overall area that is lit will be. Use a small pendant light over a sink, and larger lights over a bigger area.

Here are a few helpful tips for hanging your pendant lighting in your kitchen over an island:
When hanging pendant lighting over your kitchen island, measure the width or diameter of the surface. Space a pendant every 2 feet or so above a kitchen island and pick the right size of pendant to suit your island length. Small islands (4 to 5 feet long) can handle 1 large or 2 medium pendants. Large islands can handle 2 large or 3 medium pendants. If you are drawn to a pendant light fixture that is more of a statement piece, remember that because of it’s eye catching design, it might actually appear bigger when hung, so you might want to scale the size down a bit accordingly. Pendant lighting should hang roughly 12-20 inches below an 8-foot ceiling, but most importantly, when hanging your lights, make sure to consider the sight lines of the people in the room that are standing or sitting at the island. You want the lights to be above the tallest person’s line of sight.
