  6. A non-Toxic Shellac (added as a top coat for the paint)

I decided on a pattern and drew it out on paper first since I was doing stripes and wanted to make sure every handle looked different, but worked together.

Painting stripes: choose the paint color you want to start with and tape off the areas you’d like to paint on the wooden handle. Press the edges of the tape firmly so that paint can’t slip under the tape.  Paint the exposed wood in your first color, then place the utensil, with the painted handle up, in a cup to dry.  I painted two coats on mine to get the color I wanted.  Once the first color has dried, remove the tape and re-tape the handle to add your next color.  Continue this process until you’ve added all the colored stripes you’d like.  If you press your tape firmly down and wait until the paint is dry to remove it, you will most likely have no problems with paint leaking under the edge.  If you end up with a line that isn’t as straight as you’d like it to be, don’t fret!  Here’s my TIP OF THE DAY:  Simply tape the utensil again (above and below the area you’d like to change) and re-paint to create a straight line.  ta-da!  Paint the cutting board the same way to get the look you want. No need to do multiple color stripes here either if that feels overwhelming. 😉

If you want to make the project even easier and less time consuming ( but still just as cute) do single colors on each handle.  Simply tape once and paint.

Once all the paint has dried (overnight is best) paint or spray with a non-toxic shellac or sealer available at craft stores to help extend the life of the utensils.  Cover the top of the utensil (spoon, fork etc) with a ziploc bag and tape around the base to seal it off from the spray of the shellac. Since these are wood, they will need to be hand washed…with or without paint.

Tie up with a pretty ribbon and they are ready for gifting!
