Warm Apple Cake with Spiced Butter Cream Sauce

I am so happy that it is finally fall and I can legally break out the pumkin and apple recipes!  (I can be a little wild and I’ve been known to make a pumpkin dessert in July just cause I can’t wait!) Ashley has been asking me to bake with her, so I thought we would whip up this little favorite of mine the other day. It’s a recipe that I remember my grandma making when I was little and it must have stuck with me, because I don’t really remember her making it since I’ve been an adult, but I still crave it!  The good news is it’s super easy and a real crowd pleaser.  And, it has a ton a apples in it, so it has to be good for you, right?

Warm Apple Cake with Spiced Butter Cream Sauce

Cook Time 45 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 10 minutes


  • Apple Cake:
  • 2 C sugar
  • 1/2 C butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 C shredded Apples (I use granny smith)
  • 2 C flour
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • Nuts are optional. I like nuts, but I prefer this without them.
  • Cream sugar and butter. Add eggs, then apples. Stir in dry ingredients. Add nuts. Bake 40-45 minutes at 350.
  • Sauce:
  • 1/2 C butter
  • 1/2 C half and half
  • 1 C sugar
  • 1 1/2 TBS vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • Heat first three ingredients for sauce stirring over low heat 10-15 minutes. Remove from heat and add vanilla and nutmeg. Serve warm over cake. Add a dollop of whipped cream or ice cream for fun!
