Buffalo Plaid Black and White DIY Temporary Wallpaper

At the risk of looking like a crazy lady, I am going to show you my family room Christmas decor. 😉  I LOVE a ridiculous feature wall, some of my favorites are the Halloween wall I did out of old medicine book pages, and last year’s snowflake wall.  To create something fun doesn’t cost much (other than a few hours of your time) and a few dollars worth of supplies, but the result is often something totally cool an unexpected.  This year I am mad for plaid, and a few colorful red and green and plaid pillows from HomeGoods inspired this decor…but plaid on the pillows just wasn’t enough.  With $7 worth of scrapbook paper and some good old scotch tape, I created a buffalo plaid black and white wall that is the awesome focal point of our holiday decor.  This buffalo plaid black and white wall is even better than buffalo plaid wallpaper because it’s removeable!

This wall is about 12×9 feet, which using 12×12 sheets of cardstock means it needed about 108 sheets of paper.  Because my wall color is a light gray, I was able to skip the light gray paper that is the in between color on the buffalo plaid black and white wall and just use the natural wall color.

How cute would this wall be as buffalo check party decor too?

I started in the lower right hand corner and completed the bottom row across.  From that point, I was able to build the rows up alternating dark gray and black, and white and the light gray.  The buffalo plaid pattern is so easy o create because it is simply squares.

Working around a few obstacles (the windows and fireplace) complicated things a little bit, but all in, it took me about 2 1/2 hours to complete this project and I just worked at it in about 45 minute increments, so it seemed like nothing!  I really did just use scotch tape…the gift tape that comes in a purple package.  It doesn’t damage the paint and it sticks perfectly…until you take it off.

The pieces of paper are SO smooth up against the wall, that everyone that has been over to visit thinks I painted.  I love to see their reaction when I tell them it’s paper and tape!  I love the way it looks with my pillows gold and wood accents from HomeGoods.

I don’t know how long I’ll keep it up, for sure through the holidays, but I love it so much I might leave it through winter.  It has a way of making the room feel super cozy.

I hope you are feeling inspired to create a buffalo plaid black and white wall at your house!  This would make super cute buffalo plaid bedroom decor.  I might be biased, but I think it looks amazing and it is SO easy!

I love projects like this buffalo plaid black and white wall because DIY doesn’t mean difficult, it’s great to be able to create something with such a wow factor in just a few minutes!

    • Hi Teryl! The fireplace actually came with the house so I’m afraid I don’t have info on that. So sorry! Good luck with your search for a fireplace! 🙂

  4. Love this wall! Do you think it would work with double sided tape? Did the tape leave a residue or pull off any paint? Did the paper stay flat to the wall or begin to bulge out in any place? It’s very cool- wish you had photos of the tape as you applied it and a close up of the paper on the wall. Very creative!

    • Thanks so much Phyllis! I’m not sure about double side tape, but it would probably work. I just used the regular old gift wrap scotch tape (has a purple package) and folded it over to make a loop with the piece of tape and …does that make sense? Sorry, I’m not too high tech. 😉 It didn’t pull any paint off of my walls. I have an eggshell paint so it has a teeny sheen to it. I hope that helps! 🙂
      Have a great day!
