As many of you know I have been working on a big project for the last while. A cute family of six made a cross country move and settled in Orange County. They had been renting smaller, older homes on the East Coast, while renting out their larger home here for the last seven years. When it came time to move back to CA, they packed up not much more than their clothes and headed home. The combination of bringing not much with them, and moving back into a home that had been a rental for 7 years, meant big changes were due. It was exciting to have a blank canvas to work with…that always makes the before and after so much more fun! We left the beautiful hardwood flooring, and changed just about everything else in this family room design. Everything got a fresh coat of paint, new overhead lighting was installed…both fixtures and recessed lighting were added, built in furniture throughout the house, wainscoting, all existing cabinets in the home went from bark espresso brown to white, a new backsplash in the kitchen, and all new furniture and accessories throughout. SO much fun! We remodeled the kitchen as well, so don’t miss that transformation too!
In the family room we started with this:
after a coat of paint it was already starting to look better…
and finally…
is it silly that I still get a little giddy when I see these images? 😉 We wanted to keep things colorful, and fun, classic yet contemporary. This is a very personal space the is taxi is a nod to their time spent in New York, the picture collage shows their family adventures through the years, monograms, favorite books…things to make it comfortable and homey.
With a lot of help from my favorite spot HomeGoods, we accessorized this room with tons of fun stuff. Here’s a list of similar products if you would like to re-create something like it for yourself…
Picture ledges, mirror, bowl on mantel, box on mantel, candle on mantel, blue pillows, purple pillow, rug, coffee table, couch, ceramic coasters, black box on coffee table, small black and white frame, drapes, gold tray on coffee table, gold faceted terrarium on the coffee table, blue candle
barstools, blue chairs, pendant light, recipe box, all other tables and accessories: HomeGoods
Such a fun transformation. We had the mantel re-built, added new stone around the fireplace as well to update those. It is a fun, happy space that was an honor for me to create for this loving family. We hope they stay in the area a long time. 🙂
