AWESOME TACO BAR PARTY IDEAS
I knew pretty much instantly when I saw this adorable “taco bout a party” balloon garland that we were going to have a fiesta. Living in Southern California you basically can’t have a party that doesn’t involve tacos…so they were definitely going to be on the menu. I LOVE tacos for quick and easy Mexican themed party food. If you don’t want to make the fixings yourself, you can hire a taco truck to come and do the work for you.
GREAT TACO BAR INGREDIENTS
A great way to put together a taco bar for your next party is to make it a pot luck. Give guests a food assignment for taco fillings. Here are some of favorite taco toppings for your DIY taco bar:
- taco meat
- sour cream
- taco shells
- pico de gallo
- cheddar cheese
- lettuce
- olives
- jalapenos
- salsa
- avocados or guacamole
Refried beans, Mexican rice and tortilla chips are easy side dishes and always crowd pleasers. Make sure to have a variety of options in your taco bar so that everyone can create their own tacos just the way they like. If you provide refried beans vegetarians will have options for great tacos too.
Churros are always a hit for easy grab and go Mexican fiesta party food, as are chips and salsas. If you are looking for a killer guacamole recipe be sure to check out this post. Add it to these adorable little guacamole bowls. They are the perfect way to display different salsas and smaller food items like limes and jalapenos on your taco bar.
This mango salsa recipe is a MUST for your taco bout a party fiesta! It is SO delicious! You will love it! I used the cute guacamole bowls for chips on each place setting too…it was a cute addition to the table.
TACO BAR DISPLAY IDEAS
On the buffet table I added chips in simple paper lunch bags that I cut down with some pinking shears. I added a self adhesive fuzzy mustache to each of the bags…with all the color on the table, the kraft paper was a nice mellow addition to the table. These bags are SO easy to DIY and look adorable.
Whenever I use plain white platters on a party food table, I like to try and add a fun candy or other element to the tray for the food to sit on. I like the contrast of color and interest it adds to an otherwise white plate. Because I was using pops of black in with all of the color on this party food table, I decided it would be fun (and fit with the theme) to add dried black beans on the trays. I think it really helps those kraft bags and the mustaches pop even more. It was such an easy and inexpensive addition to the table that had a huge wow factor.
Mexican sodas in all kinds of fun color and flavors were another easy addition to the Mexican themed party food. I added DIY Mustache straws made with the same self adhesive mustaches as I used on the chip bags, to each bottle. All you need for this easy DIY are the mustaches, some cute black and white striped straws, and some cardstock. You can find the easy DIY tutorial for these adorable party decorations here.
MEXICAN FIESTA PARTY DECORATIONS
I love the chance to get creative with party decorations and a taco bout a party themed fiesta is the perfect opportunity to break out all the streamers and go crazy! These fringed streamers are amazing! I used to think I had to make my own…and now you can buy them pre-made!! So awesome! I love the fun, dimensional look of them. They make and easy and really celebratory fiesta table backdrop. I bought these fringed streamers in every color of the rainbow to add behind the taco bout a party balloon garland. They were easy to set up and a breeze to take down too! The best kind of Mexican fiesta party decoration!
The Taco Bout a party Balloon Garland is super cool. I was fully expecting the balloons to come with small straws that you use to blow them up. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised to find that these were self inflating!! Here’s a tip about these garlands: Each of the letters has a packet inside that you pop and the balloon starts to make a fizzing sound and starts to self inflate. I was a bit worried at first because a few of the letters seemed to not fully inflate and then stall out. I realized that if I shook the balloon a bit, the packet inside reactivated and kept inflating. It reminded me of the hand warmer pouches that you put in your pockets when you go skiing. They stay warm for 8 hours, but sometimes you have to shake them a bit to re-activate the chemicals that make them warm to get them to heat up more. Same idea here. If you start to notice your balloons stop inflating, simply give them a little shake until you are satisfied with how full they look.
I wanted to do something fun on the table too, and adding regular paper streamers in all different colors was an easy addition. It made the plain white table pop. I love the look of them all cute at varying lengths. It adds even more visual interest to the table decor.
Mexican fiesta party decorations can be as fun and easy as putting brightly colored daisies and cactus into cans. I bought a few Mexican food items like enchilada sauce and green chiles in cans and emptied out the cans to use as vases. These cans make such cute Mexican themed party centerpieces! The mix of colors and sizes with the flowers and cactus look great on a colorful table. And the best part is you don’t need to be a florist to make them look fabulous! I added these fun fiesta flags to each can of flowers to add a little height to each Mexican themed party centerpiece and make them look even more festive.
FIESTA THEME PARTY IDEAS FOR THE TABLE
I wanted to carry the festive and colorful paper decorations over to the party table where guests would be sitting. I experimented with a few different ways to run the same paper streamers on the guests table as I had on the food table, and found that this kind of woven look was super cool. Believe it or not, these streamers aren’t even taped to the table or anything. I just took strips of streamers in all the colors and laid them across each other to create this woven pattern. I love the way it turned out…and it is SO easy to recreate!
Isn’t that fun?! And SO easy! I cut the streamers at various lengths too, so no need to worry about keeping everything super uniform. You can see how they look on the bottom here:
These cactus tumblers are the CUTEST!! Every guest had their own at their place setting to take home, along with a mini sombrero. I continued the paper themed decor with layered paper plates in contrasting colors, navy blue and yellow, white paper napkins wrapped around the red plastic silverware and wrapped with more paper streamers, topped off with a cute fiesta flag tucked in. I never want to leave out any chance to decorate something so when my original idea to use this amazing paper flower door decoration didn’t work out due to moving the party to an unplanned location, I repurposed these AMAZING paper flowers as a Mexican themed party centerpiece for the table, and tied smaller paper flowers to the backs of each chair…I am obsessed with these flowers!!!
I found another spot to put these paper flowers to work. I wanted Mexican theme desserts, so churros were a must, but my cute budding baker wanted to try her hand at a naked cake…so I let her make the centerpiece of our party table. As soon as I saw these paper flowers, I knew the cake needed one as a cake topper. Doesn’t it look like it was made for the top of that cake?
I dressed up the bottom of the cake with some fun DIY pom pom cupcake toppers. I added these awesome pre-made pom poms to the tops of toothpicks with a hot glue gun and just popped them in around the base of the cake. Such a fun and easy DIY that really dresses up any cake or cupcakes. I LOVE that I can buy these pom poms pre-made! I have a great pom pom maker and can make my own, but making this many and in uniform sizes would be quite the project! I now have all the sizes and colors of these adorable pre-made poms here at home so I can make quick garlands, cupcake toppers, headbands and more. Such a great find! I’ll put together a quick tutorial for these adorable cupcake toppers soon!
If you are looking for the most delicious Mexican theme desserts, this Tres Leches Cake recipe is one of our favorites! Andy asks for it on his birthday every year.
No taco party is complete without a fun activity for your guests to enjoy, and this gold Donkey pinata is the perfect fiesta party idea. I love fiesta party decor that can double as an activity and so I used the pinata and these cute luminary bags as decor around the Mexican themed party food table. Once guests were done eating and ready to move on to the party activities, we hoisted the pinata up in a tree and let guests go to town trying to open it up. Each guest took a fiesta luminary bag as their candy collecting bag.
FIESTA PARTY FAVORS
These adorable DIY fiesta party favor headbands were too much fun to make and give to guests. I simply turned these black headbands into fiesta party wear by adding some of the awesome pre-made party pom poms and these cute pre-made felt flowers in both pinks and the red/yellow combination. These adorable flowers come with a sticky back, so I added a piece of felt to the back of each one and then hot-glued them to the headbands. I’ll post a tutorial soon for these cute DIY fiesta party favors.
