Easy Design Updates for a Cozy Guest Bedroom

Get your guest bedroom cozy and ready to welcome family and friends this holiday season with these pretty guest bedroom decor ideas.

We’ve been accustomed to welcoming guests year round in the OC Ranch Reno, and summer is a beautiful time to visit Utah, but what I didn’t expect when we moved to Utah is that we would actually have more guests visit during the fall and winter months than during the summer! I guess all of those Californians and Arizonians that we know are itching for some snow! 😉 The 1987 Fixer Upper is at the mouth of two canyons full of world class ski resorts and just 30 minutes from even more amazing resorts…so do they really want to see us…or ski! 😉 lol! Either way, we’re happy to have them! I always get the itch to make a few changes here and there to rooms around the house when the weather changes…so I decided to add a few easy design updates to cozy up the guest room just in time for the change of seasons.

Some projects just take longer than others around here and putting up these drapes was definitely one of them! I have the curtain rod for over a year, it just took a while to convince my cute handyman to put it up. Changing one thing in a room is always a good reminder to me of just how important every detail, every layer is in a space. Just adding that layer of fabric with a little bit of texture in the linen and pattern on the fabric made the room feel instantly transformed. Of course it got better when I added the other details too…but just that one change was HUGE!!

I wanted to bring some darker moodier colors into this bright room to cozy things up a bit, so this navy velvet quilt was the perfect addition.

Do you ever shop from your house? I do it ALL the time. Sometimes all a room needs to feel refreshed is a few borrowed things from another room in the house repurposed in a new spot. I have had these pillows in the family room for a little while and since I’m updating a few things in there too, I moved them upstairs and I LOVE them in here. They are such a fine pinstripe that I combined them with this bolder, wider stripe in black and cream and I don’t think it’s overwhelming in the stripes department…but I love stripes. 😉

This bed is usually all white, and I LOVE a white duvet cover and pillows, but wanting to warm this space up a bit I added these oatmeal colored linen shams in place of the usual white honeycomb shams. They tie in nicely with the oatmeal color linen on the drapes and that same color stripe in the pillows. It’s so nice that by just switching out a quilt and a couple of pillows I can utilize the same sheets and duvet all year, but create a totally different looking bed.

Believe it or not I have had this artwork hiding in a closet for over a year. I knew I loved it when I saw it, but I wasn’t sure exactly where I wanted to hang it. Well, once I started putting this room together, I realized that over this bed was the perfect spot! I am in love with it and it will look great year round.

I debated whether or not to add this artwork next to the bed as well, but honestly the nightstand and accessories were looking a bit drab in my opinion. It needed a little more life over there, and this pretty antiqued frame and soft landscape was just what was needed. These pieces by Studio McGee for Target are one of my favorite deals around.

I have historically had a lighter color seagrass basket on the bottom shelf of this nightstand, but I swapped it out for this darker one, again to bring in more of those dark, moody vibes.

The clock is one of my favorites and I love the contrast on the white nightstand. A few pretty books, a ceramic lamp from HomeGoods and my favorite eucalyptus and this little vignette is all set.

Lastly, the faux leather bench at the end of the bed adds great warmth and cozy vibe to the space and gives guests a spot to sit and put on shoes, set suitcases and more.

I still have a few things to finish in this guest bedroom. There is this odd niche where I would like to add some pretty open shelving, including one shelf that is deep enough to use as a small desk. On the wall opposite the bed, I am on the hunt for the perfect dresser. Probably something in a natural wood…whitewashed, and maybe a little antique for some character. I already have this round, black framed mirror to go above that dresser and a few accessories will be added once I find the perfect piece. Once I add the dresser, I’ll need to swap out the bench for one of these super skinny rustic benches because there isn’t enough space at the foot of the bed for both a big bench and a dresser. It’s a work in progress for sure, but I’m pretty happy with how things are shaping up and the cozy guest bedroom it’s becoming!

Guest Bedroom Fall Decor Ideas

I have a few pillows listed here, so let’s talk about pillow inserts for a minute. In my opinion, the right pillow insert, can make most any pillow cover look high end. No matter how inexpensive the pillow cover, with the right insert, it’ll look WAY more high end. If your family is anything like mine, we like to actually LAY on our throw pillows, not just stare at them looking pretty on the bed or couch. That would never fly in my house. Down pillow inserts are what most people are familiar with for the ability to fluff them up and make them look nice, but there are several awesome down alternative pillow inserts that I actually like WAY better than down. Not just for allergy purposes, but because I think they are much more comfortable to lay on. I get mine on Amazon from this pillow shop. They have pretty much every size you can think of and I think you will love them as much as I do. Order an insert that is slightly bigger (2 inches is good) than your pillow cover. If you have an 18×18 cover, get a 20×20 pillow insert etc., for maximum fullness. Looking for more pretty pillows for your home? Check out this post.
