Home Office Decorating Ideas : Our Home Office Remodel

If you’ve seen the #1987FixerUpper foyer entryway remodel, then you probably remember seeing a little bit about me opening up the wall in the entryway as part of our home office remodel. Prior to remodeling this house, I was pouring over home office decorating ideas, trying to come up with the best plan for this space. It had been a really closed off, dark space and I wanted to open it up and make it a feature right off of the front door. Let’s start with a few before pictures, shall we? 😉

As soon as you walked in the front door, you were greeted with a dark entryway and this little doorway with an oak paneled door leading into a home office.

The honey oak theme continued inside with honey oak built-ins, a honey oak desk and some track lighting. Eek!

I get that this was an office…but I needed it to feel a little less corporate. 😉

I think that the previous owner probably used this office for some serious meetings…which may have necessitated the walled off/closed door office vibe. We, on the other hand, didn’t need the home office to be so closed off and I couldn’t wait to rip down that wall…so, I did it! 

It was amazing to see just how much brighter the office seemed already, just by taking out all that wood and the carpet. Incredible!

The office has one of the best windows in the house. It was a shame to hide it behind a wall!

It was such a breath of fresh air to not have the entryway walled off completely anymore and to be able to see into the office and out to the front yard.

New flooring to match the rest of the house, overhead lighting, painted walls, opening up the wall, new trim and removing the plantation shutters on the windows and this is a completely transformed space.

The office stayed looking like this for some time. I had plans for built-ins and decor, but they weren’t in the budget right away. When covid hit, we suddenly, like everyone else, found ourselves needing a work from home office space, so I grabbed a few things I had around the house (an ikea desk, an old console table from Homegoods, and a piece of art that had been in the basement) and created a make-shift office for John so he could look presentable on zoom calls. 😉

Jack was already comfortable with the new space. 😉

Once it became evident that we would be using this new home office more permanently with Covid restriction lasting for so long, it kind of moved finishing the office up to the top of the to-do list.

I designed some built-in cabinets with one of my favorite cabinet guys and we got them installed asap!

What a difference some cabinets and color made in this home office design!

I can’t get enough of those dark blue cabinets juxtaposed against all that bright light on the walls and trim and light coming in from the windows. 

It’s been fun finding decor items that look good on dark shelves. 

I had wiring put in for this art light and added this picture from Target.

The baskets are also from Target, and most of the decor pieces are from Amazon. You can find most of them linked here.
