I know you’ve seen the OC Ranch Reno kitchen pop up in a few seasonal posts over the past few months, but I’ve never shown you the before and after so I thought it was about time! 🙂 I really did love this kitchen the way it was for many years. We were SO young when we bought this home…right out of school. At that time I was in my mid twenties and had no idea what I was doing design wise. It makes me laugh to see the different ways I decorated this place and what it looks like now. We’ve kind of grown up together I guess you could say. 😉

When we first purchased this new build we took it as-is…no upgrades, all builder basic everything. Funny thing was, at that time a white kitchen was the “cheap” option…but it was what I wanted, and all these years later I still have white kitchens because I love them so much. The 6 inch white tile countertops and all the grout that came with it I could have done without though. 😉 Let’s take a quick look at what this kitchen has looked like over the last 20 years….
Browns were very in at the time and so was a Tuscan style…can you tell? 😉 In 2008 we remodeled the house a bit. Added wood floors throughout, woodwork, new countertops, and a bunch of other things. Granite was all the rage then…
When the leak happened, I was NOT planning on re-doing this kitchen, but hey…that was definitely a silver lining to the mess that happened! It had been 12 years since we had done anything in here, and even though I still think it was a nice kitchen, it was definitely ready for some updating. We didn’t have much of a choice when the leak took out the lower cabinets and the flooring…
Such a mess. I have to constantly remind myself that you often have to make things a bigger mess before they can get better…otherwise I might have a panic attack during all these remodels! 😉
At the time we did the remodel, our plan was to get it back up and running and rent it out again, so I made some design choices in the new kitchen that I most likely would not have if I had known at the time that we were just going to keep using it ourselves.
I went with Ikea cabinet boxes and Semi-Handmade cabinet fronts. I think they look nice and do the job, they just limited us a bit in the kitchen configuration when we re-did it.
We started the project, got about half way through and then BAM!! Covid hit. So the kitchen looked like this for months as everything sat at a standstill…
After all the craziness and about a 13 month reno…which should have taken about 3…we ended up with a finished kitchen that I am very happy with.
After we had been without renters for a year and Ash started doing online school as a result of the pandemic, we decided we could make it work to just keep the house so we could spend more time here now that we suddenly had more flexibility. At that point I changed the design choices a little bit. 😉 I added quartz countertops, and a zellige backsplash, and a chandelier I had been in love with to dress it up a bit.
Moving the microwave under the countertop was a bit of a headache, but SO worth it! I love having the stove and a hood that look pretty instead of a microwave over the oven!
These pendants were an inexpensive, but fun design choice.
I gave up a little bit of the pantry space to put in this little countertop and open shelves and it is now my favorite spot in the kitchen.
Well, there she is! The OC Ranch Kitchen Remodel before and after. What do you think?
