The last of the bathrooms to get remodeled in the OC Ranch Reno was the kids, or guest bath. It’s a Jack and Jill bath of sorts with direct access into a double vanity area from one bedroom and hallway access right across from another bedroom. The kids have grown up sharing that bathroom, but now that they are both older and bringing friends (and soon a spouse for Andy!) to the house and we use it for friends and guests, it needed an update along with the rest of the house.

Here’a a little peek at where we started with this bathroom remodel:
We had travertine in there and it took quite a bit of maintenance needed to be resealed and it just looked dirty and worn. It needed to be updated. I used engineered hardwood in the primary bath, and I’m not afraid to use it in just about any bathroom because it’s very durable, but in kid’s bathrooms I definitely prefer to use tile. I found this great large format 12×12 charcoal colored porcelain tile at Floor & Decor that was perfect.
We ripped out the vinyl tub and shower combo and prepped the bathroom for a tiled shower.
I chose this “white” subway tile that is 2.5×8″. You can order it at Lowes which is great when you need to return it! I like that there is quite a bit of variation in the white color of each tile so it adds a lot of interest to the shower walls.
Here’s my big tip for remodeling a bathroom on a budget. Cabinets are insanely expensive! We used Ikea cabinets in the kitchen and primary bathroom, but Ikea doesn’t make “bathroom” cabinet boxes. All of their boxes are 24″ which is typical for a kitchen. In the primary bathroom it wasn’t a problem because we had plenty of room to work with and the bathroom could accommodate thee 24 inch depth, but we did not have that luxury in this bathroom. We only had 21″ inches to work with at most. So, what did we do? We had the 24″ boxes ripped down to 21″. Now, this limited us a bit in that we had to have all cabinets and no drawers because all of the Ikea drawers fit the 24″ depth, but it hasn’t been a huge problem and it saved us a ton!
I added the quartz remnants from the kitchen and primary bath to be the bathroom countertops in here, new lighting, new mirrors and new fixtures and thought I was done.
It felt so clean and fresh in there!
But really…to clean. HA! It needed something to make it a little more exciting. So, I started looking at small bathroom wallpaper ideas. Since it is a small bathroom, and the toilet and shower area get WAY too wet to include wallpaper, I knew it would be perfect for just the sink area. The tile in the shower and the shower pan added some interest in that tight space, so I just needed to add something fun to the sink area. If you’re thinking about wallpapering a room, check out these tips for choosing wallpaper.
I wanted to choose wallpaper for this small space that kept it feeling bright and open. It can get a little dark in there since there isn’t a window, so I wanted to keep it light and bright.
I ended up going with the Serena and Lily palm print wallpaper. It’s a large scale pattern with a light color and a white background so it helped it to not feel overwhelming in the space and it kept with the coastal feel of the rest of the house. What a difference adding some wallpaper to this small room made!
The black fixtures and mirrors really pop off of the paper.
It transitions so easily into the shower area. I love it!
Didn’t adding that wallpaper make such a difference? It adds so much personality!
