Seven layer dip has been around forever and is seriously one of the best and most delicious appetizers you can make. It’s always a hit at every party. You can always buy your 7 layer dip at Costco or your local grocery store, but this Cinco de Mayo rather than buying it at the store, make it in minutes! I like to make my guacamole from scratch for this recipe too for the absolute best taste, but you can make this with entirely store bought ingredients too!

7 Layer Dip Ingredients
1 16oz can Refried Beans
1 8oz container sour cream
2 teaspoons taco seasoning
8oz Grape tomatoes diced
1 can black olives drained and sliced
3 green onions finely chopped
2 cups shredded Mexican blend cheese
2 large ripe avocados peeled, pitted and mashed
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1 fresh lime
1 teaspoon salt
How to Make 7 Layer Dip
Well, much like the name says, 7 layer dip is just that. Seven layers of deliciousness in this easy Mexican dip that are super easy to assemble. You can whip this up in no time and be eating it this afternoon.
Mash the avocados in a medium bowl to desired consistency. Mix in the juice of one lime, garlic salt, and regular salt. Set aside.
Blend your sour cream and taco seasoning in a small bowl until combined. Set aside.
Your 7 layer dip order can vary, but here’s the way I like to make it. Spread your refried beans in a baking dish with sides (I used a 7 x 11 dish) or on a large serving platter. (I like to mix a little tabasco in my beans for some extra flavor)
I think it’s easier to spread the guacamole on top of the beans and add the sour cream on top. I think it helps the guac stay green and fresh looking and the sour cream is a bit runnier, so it’s easier to add that layer after the guac. You can make it in any order you prefer though.
Top the beans with the guacamole, spread it evenly over the top of the beans.
Top the guacamole layer with a layer of sour cream mixture.
Add a layer of shredded cheese.
Next add a layer of tomatoes, green onions, and sliced black olives.
Chill and serve.
7 Layer Dip Variations
It’s hard to believe that you could make this amazing old fashioned 7 layer dip any better, but here are a couple of variations to try.
If you feel like making this an eight layer dip, you can add a layer of salsa on top of the sour cream layer for some extra zing.
For a heartier dip recipe, make this dip right before serving and add a layer of seasoned ground beef or if you want to serve it cold, seasoned chicken works well too.
Try adding more things that you love to this delicious dip. Green peppers, cilantro, diced jalapenos…the ability to make this recipe your own makes it fun!
Serve with tortilla chips.
I love appetizers and dips. I can easily make a meal out of them! This dip is SO easy and SO delicious it is sure to be a hit wherever you take it….or even if you just make it for yourself. Don’t think I haven’t done that! I may have eaten these props! 😉
HOW TO SERVE 7 LAYER DIP
I used a 7 x 11 glass baking dish to make this Seven Layer Dip, but for another fun serving idea to make a cute food table, you can make this Seven Layer Dip in small individual jars like these. They look so cute and are perfect for parties.
