It’s the most wonderful time of the year…at least as far as the kids are considered, because the kitchen is full of baked goods and sweet treats. Every year we love to bake and make homemade goodies for friends and relatives and popcorn party mix ideas are some of our favorite go-to treats. You can make sweet or salty or a combination of both…that is our favorite. It looks fun, tastes great, and if you give it a clever name, popcorn party mix can be a seasonal treat that is perfect for every party and occasion year round.
This time of year, we like to call our Popcorn party mix ideas Reindeer Bait. This popcorn party mix recipe has a little Christmas twist with the addition of red and green M&Ms, but you can make it with any color or chocolate candies to make it work for any party or event.
INGREDIENTS FOR POPCORN PARTY MIX RECIPE
It doesn’t take much to whip up this easy popcorn party mix. You will need the following: (you can find a printable recipe card at the bottom of the post)
Popcorn (butter, plain popped or kettle corn…whichever you prefer. If I am really in a hurry, I buy pre-popped popcorn to save time)
Pretzels (I like to use the snaps because the shape is a great size for this popcorn party mix)
White Chocolate chips
M&Ms or other color coated chocolate candy
Honey Roasted Peanuts (You can add any nuts here, this is just what we prefer. If you know someone with nut allergies, simply omit the nuts)
Dried Cranberries
HOW TO MAKE POPCORN PARTY MIX RECIPE
There is really no big secret to making this popcorn mix. You can add or delete ingredients to your tastes, and increase or decrease quantities of whatever you prefer. It is basically a no-fail recipe. Here’s how we like to make it:
In a large glass bowl, stir together one package of popcorn (if you are using microwave popcorn use two packages), 1/3 a bag of pretzels, 3/4 cup of dried cranberries, 3/4 cup of M&Ms, 3/4 Cup of Peanuts
When you stir them together, all of the nuts, berries and chocolate will sink to the bottom…that’s ok. When you add the white chocolate to the popcorn mix it will get them more integrated into the mix.
In a microwave, melt 1 cup of white chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl. Chocolate can burn easily, so be sure to microwave it in spurts, no more than about 20-30 seconds at a time, stirring it each time you check it to make sure it gets smooth and creamy without burning.
Once your chocolate is melted, fold it into your popcorn mix making sure to mix those heavier ingredients that have fallen to the bottom of the bowl, throughout the mix. The chocolate will help them to stick to other larger, lighter pieces of popcorn and pretzels.
After you have mixed the chocolate into the popcorn mix, spread the party popcorn mix onto a sheet of parchment paper to cool and harden. Once the chocolate cools, it will be ready to serve. If you are not serving it immediately, place your popcorn mix in an air tight container for up to a week.
When I use this popcorn party mix idea for a get-together, I usually serve it in these bags. They are super cute and inexpensive and make this delicious popcorn party mix even more irresistible. I’ll share the way we like to wrap this fun mix up for Christmas later this week with a fun printable to go with it, so stay tuned! 🙂
